Genre Analysis

This page will break down and analyze three different intercommunicative practices within the GSC community.

News Articles

The first genre that will be identified is a news article. News articles are written on well-defined topics to inform people on the happenings in the business world. The news article that will be analyzed is "Gartner Announces Rankings of the 2018 Supply Chain Top 25"

http://www.supplychainbrain.com/single-article-page/article/gartner-announces-rankings-of-the-2018-supply-chain-top-25/.

This news article was written by Gartner themselves as they unveiled the annual supply chain top 25 companies. The article talks about the growth and expansion of the SC sectors of major companies and Unilever has scored the top spot for three years in a row. This news article is important because the SC field is extremely competitive as companies compete to see who can have the most efficient SC. The article even goes on to explain what a top SC looks like and the goals they need to strive for. This shows that this community is always looking for new ways to improve. Reaching maximum efficiency and driving customer satisfaction are just a few of SC's main goals as a community.  I learned that in this community, they are always seeking to become the top company and perform at max efficiency. The article really stressed how Unilever was the top company for years in a row and how the company maintained their prestigious position. I noticed that the SC community is extremely competitive by the tone in the article. The article also showed me that learning new strategies to improve is also what SC members place first as their main goal.

Newsletters

Another genre that is widely used within the business community is newsletters. They are bulletins periodically issued to update members of the GSC society on the latest news and  happenings in the business world.

The newsletter that will be analyzed is the May 2018 newsletter for the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP)

http://www.naylornetwork.com/cscm-nwl/newsletter.asp?issueID=58954

This genre was written as a newsletter for the CSCMP for May of 2018. The newsletter talked about Annual Supply Chain Professionals Appreciation Day which was on May 21st. It also had news articles on the latest educational findings within the field. It even highlighted important people within the field who were conducting new research. There was even a section for rewards and recognition for others who have achieved great goals throughout their careers in the community. Lastly, there was a connect section in the newsletter which talked about making an important connection with our troops. This shows the goals of this community are not only to improve and reach top success but to also support and recognize those who do reach those goals and strive for new findings and information within the sector. After analyzing this newsletter, it really opened my eyes to how close knit the SC community is. I had no clue there was an appreciation day for professionals in this field or that certain members were recognized and given awards for their achievements. This makes joining this field much more exciting, knowing I can be recognized for putting in hard work and feel like I am a part of something important. This genre does a great job at showing the smaller goals of this discourse community which includes supporting other peers in this field.

Business Reports

Lastly, the next genre that will be identified is business reports. Business reports are used to report research based findings on specific topics.

"Millenials in Supply Chain" is a business report from APICS. The link is posted below:

This specific genre is a business report which is often used in the business sector. This specific report is about the rise of working millennials in the GSC community and how more and more millennials are interested in GSC versus their parent's generation. This shows that the community prides growth of new members joining the community as they are welcoming them and praising them for choosing this career path. The report is filled with statistics taken from a sample of young adults aged 22-30. The statistics are laid out with graphs and tables to show the impact of the numbers and their growth throughout the years. This shows this community likes to see educational and scholarly proof when learning new things. After analyzing this report, I learned that statistics are a must have for business reports. The report was filled completely with graphs on almost every page which proved to be an important genre for the business world.
